The Department of Special Surgery / Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King Abdullah University Hospital was able to perform a specific operation on a 5-year-old patient who was suffering from the inability to open the mouth permanently due to the lack of growth of the lower jaw bone and calcification of the temporal joint on both sides as a result of a congenital deformity.
The operation was performed by a medical team under the supervision of a consultant in oral and maxillofacial surgery Dr. Tayseer Al-Khatib, as the surgery lasted five hours, and this operation is considered one of the complex and difficult operations.
The medical team took a bone graft from the bones of the rib cage and implanted it in the temporal joint from both sides, and the operation was successful.
Dr. Tayseer Al-Khatib said that the patient's suffering was represented in her inability to open the mouth permanently and great difficulty in chewing due to severe stiffness in the temporal joint on both sides and atrophy of the lower jaw bone, indicating that these operations are usually performed by a team of surgeons specialized in specialized centers such as this distinguished university center.
